OTHELLO
SCENIC DESIGNER
Othello was my first lead scenic designer position. For this production, the director (Sam Henderson) wanted to set us in Italy in the 60s, specifically at a Cantina with a live jazz band on stage. He wanted the place to feel alive, and emphasized his desire for asymmetry, rusticness, a blending of interior and exterior worlds, and for the jazz band to feel almost ominously ever-present. With this being my first actualized design after taking a few scenic classes, I took special care in doing ample research of Italian cityscapes, villages, and interiors of both Italian cantinas as well as 60s jazz clubs, and then created numerous sketches and rough models before landing on my final design.
